Humans have some pretty weird ideas when it comes to books, don't they?
[Hey, Accord! It's your favorite Butterfly disguised as a Moth, Nick, just hanging outside the library with a pile of books on the floor next to him and his grimoire in his hand. He had gotten bored recently, and having discovered the library, he decided to check out what sort of literature people read around here. What he found was more surprising than expected.]
Seriously, half of these so called "children's books" read as if the author was on drugs or something. I mean, fairy tales are great and all, but they should at least make one lick of sense, you know? Like this "Alice in Wonderland" one. I get the whole magic part of it, but it doesn't really teach you anything. It's all just rabbits and chess boards and weird creatures who speak in rhyme.
And, honestly, I don't really get it.
[A pause.]
I like the ones where there's a monster or a dragon or something and the guy has to kill it to save the princess. Those are cool, I have to admit.
Why don't they make more of those...?
no subject
He can't... even believe this. Just kind of stopping in his tracks, linefacing so. hard.]
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that such simple-minded and appalling stories would be your style.
no subject
Oh, if it isn't you.
[And a shrug.]
I don't know, I think they're more complex than they seem. Good vs. evil, the monster getting killed in the end...everyone's happy in the end.
...Except for the monster, of course.
no subject
Isn't that a rather hypocritical view for a bug creature?
[this conversation is already so mature]
no subject
How so? We "bug creatures" are held in high regard where I come from. We aren't monsters in anyone's story.
Unlike other people.
no subject
It's likely that those other creatures earned their title of 'monster.'
Mortals write themselves in as heroes because they fear the alternative.
no subject
[A laugh.] Really, it's all just one big way to make themselves someone they're not.
no subject
[...even though there really were dragon slayers in his world, but we just won't mention those...]
no subject
[He folds his arms, looking amused.]
But, if I had to choose? I wouldn't be either hero or monster. I'm my own thing.
no subject
Oh? What a special butterfly you are, then.
...Though it does sound a little like something that someone who was trying very hard to fool themselves would say.
no subject
It's the truth. I don't need to fool myself, because unlike most people, I know exactly what I am.
no subject
[yeah no, he's smirking like he's finding this very funny]
no subject
If you have something to say, say it or keep your stupid monstrous mouth shut and forever hold your peace. I don't like teasing.
no subject
Mostly it's just that I think you're an entitled and deluded idiot.
[did he miss anything? hmm.]
Oh, and a coward.
no subject
[It hurt to be called that because he knew it was true.]
If that's so, then you're a softskinned moron who can't take a few harsh words to save your life.
Save your insults for somebody who actually cares.
no subject
Well, you did ask.
And, goodness... who's being softskinned now?
no subject
[Juuust going to go grab a book off the pile next to him and open it and pretend to be distracted by the words inside. He does pause to glare over at Tek, though.]
Don't you have anything better to do than belittle me?
no subject
Not really. It's a slow day. [--stretching his arms a little]
no subject
[But might as well change the subject. After a pause, he gestures slightly with the book in his hands towards the pile of books next to him.]
...Do you read, much?
no subject
I do, actually.
At least, when there isn't anything more interesting to do.
no subject
no subject
[He sounds incredibly disbelieving over here.]
How in the world do talking white rabbits and mock turtles and a girl almost drowning in her own tears, among other things, even begin to symbolize that?!
no subject
no subject
You're the one speaking nonsense about nonsense, really.
Guess I shouldn't be too surprised.

See, that's sort of what Alice is about. Completely reconstructs the rules of "normal" reality and shows a place where everything works backwards. It's a very devil-may-care sort of ideal that keeps it together.
no subject
[A long pause.]
You know what, I'm not going to break my brain on things like "reality"
and trying to figure out places where things go backwards. It's a waste of my time.
